In this exciting scene, men of the Lewis and Clark expedition brave deadly rapids in a dugout canoe. Many times the expedition would portage their gear around difficult stretches of water. Other times, as seen here, they decided to risk it, often with entire villages of Native Americans turning out to watch the white men drown.
