1. The Battle of Antietam

The bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War took place on Sept. 17, 1862, at a place called Antietam (also called Sharpsburg).  Although not a decisive win for the Union army, because General Lee's invasion of Maryland was turned back, it was considered a Northern victory.

One of the most important documents in American History, the Emancipation Proclamation is considered an important step towards the abolition of slavery.
