INTRODUCTION: The importance of this event in the Civil War cannot be overestimated. Indeed, the significance of this location was highlighted in the War of 1812, when the British attempted to do the same thing. For the Union, this was a crucial part of the Anaconda Plan designed to strangle the Confederacy. Also, Texas was basically eliminated, since men and material could no longer cross the Mississippi. |
